On formation of Gujarat State on 1st May, 1960, a department named Education and Labour Department came into existence.

Social welfare, labour, prohibition, excise and employment were included in Education Department. Later subjects were gradually taken away from Education and Labour Department on administrative grounds.

Since August, 1976 Education department came into existence as separate secretariat department, which looks after education including primary education, continuous education, literacy education, secondary education, higher education, technical education, pharmacy education

Office of the Commissioner Higher Education is responsible for executing policy initiatives, regulating & funding higher education system of the State, in a network of universities, affiliated colleges and research institutions.

• There are 109 Government Colleges, 356 Grant in Aid Colleges 13 research institutions, 3 Graduate Basic Training Colleges, 15 Gram Vidyapiths and 430 Non Granted Colleges (Total 926) under Office of Commissionerate of Higher Education Gujarat.

• Among several initiatives taken by vibrant Gujarat, the Knowledge Consortium of Gujarat (KCG) established by the Department of Education, stands out prominently as a major response to the very theme of the current century, which is being rapidly characterized as a gateway to the future where the human world family will at last come to create the network of relationships through the harmonizing threads of knowledge. Knowledge has therefore become today the dynamic watchword, and major progressive steps of development are being measured in terms of advancing of knowledge and learning society. Indeed, the Department of Education, Government of Gujarat has manifested eloquently its commitment to the future by creating the Knowledge Consortium of Gujarat. Since the emerging world scenario is marked by various peaks of concentrated knowledge and excellence dotted across the world, it would be imperative for knowledge societies to innovate, cooperate and collaborate with other institutions of knowledge in the world. Such an approach based on collaborating and forming a ‘consortium’ of knowledge would also tremendously accelerate the pace of development of knowledge in the State.

Various Activities of KCG

Finishing School :

It is an Employability Enhancement Initiative of the Education Department, Government of Gujarat for imparting training on Skill development for students of Higher and Technical Education to make them Industry-ready.

Mega Placement Camp :

To Organise Placement Camps at District Level for final year students of Gujarat State.

Started ‘Study in Gujarat’ initiatives to avail quality education to the youth all over world.

Started ‘Student Startup and Innovation Hub’ with a mission to strengthen the field of Research and Innovation in institutions of higher education in Gujarat & to create the most supportive environment possible so that researchers, innovators and learners can do what they do best- advance understanding and apply new knowledge.

SANDHAN (All Gujarat Integrated Classroom) is an initiative by OCHE (Office of the Commissioner of Higher Education) and KCG (Knowledge Consortium of Gujarat), Department of Education-Government of Gujarat. SANDHAN aims at providing a very creative base for Faculty and Students to fulfill the need for having the Audio-Visual aids for imparting education in the Higher Education.

Saptadhara’ provides a cultural platform to students of higher education, where they feel the bliss of creativity. The colleges and universities across Gujarat will have to focus on various areas of education, art and knowledge for the manifold progress of the youth.

UDISHA (Universal Development of Integrated employability Skills through Higher education Agencies) :

‘UDISHA’ is a placement initiative where students directly connect to various employers to improve their employability skills. Udisha work as a communication pathway between Employer and Job Seekers. For this, college students are trained for soft skill and domain training as per the requirement of Industries.

Academic & Administrative Assurance (AAA):

A unique initiative of Government of Gujarat with an objective to facilitate awareness among the colleges about the processes and systems that can ensure quality enhancement and realization of goals set in higher education. AAA is a systematic effort at community driven, continuous, internal evaluation and mentoring of the Institutions. It works in synchronization with NAAC Performance Indicators.

FDP - Training and Capability Program:

Knowledge Consortium Of Gujarat organizing one week Training Programs for the faculties of different Universities / Colleges of Gujarat to provide opportunities for professional and career development as per UGC norms, so that faculties may fulfill their role and responsibility within the system of higher education. It is proposed to enhance their motivational skills and knowledge through systematic orientation in specific topics, techniques and methodologies, thereby to encourage them to take initiatives for innovative and creative work.
